Stepping Through The Door of Change
What does letting go mean to you? What emotions arise when you think of “letting go”?
The ability to let go of the things that no longer serves us can sometimes feel like a double-edged sword. On one hand we have the freedom of being released from something/someone that doesn’t belong in our lives anymore. Then on the other hand we have the sadness and guilt of walking away. Letting go has always been something that I do not take lightly. I try to invest as much as I can into a situation to make things work. Sometimes we invest so much into something that does not serve us, and it leaves us feeling empty and depleted. This is your sign to walk away.
When we constantly give and give, but we don’t receive much in return then its time to let go and walk away. Yet, there are other times that we must walk away even if the events occurring aren’t negative in any way. Sometimes we must walk away when we no longer feel the situation or person resonates with us anymore. Change is inevitable and it all comes down to how we interpret change.
One thing that has helped me when it comes to making changes in my life has been gratitude. Now, I am in no way shape or form saying that I don’t feel sadness or grief when I make changes, because I definitely feel those things. The important step is to just allow yourself to feel it all. Let it sink in and give thanks to those emotions for showing you the truth of the situation. Just don’t let those emotions linger because they will try to build a home within you. I’ve held onto that sadness for too long when I have had to make changes and it was detrimental to my mental health.
Sometimes we are programmed to think that we must consistently involve ourselves in the same day-to-day or lifestyle to be successful. But why should we be bound to one thing our entire lives? Exploring and enjoying new experiences, people and jobs are crucial to understanding all the wonders that life has to offer. I’ve definitely experienced insecurities and fear when I’ve made all of these changes, but I am constantly going against the status-quo. It isn’t easy to be surrounded by people who are more unlike you because it causes you to sometimes veer away from what you truly desire.
Bringing awareness to this concept isn’t a comfortable sensation, but it helps bring clarity on how to move forward. To be transparent, I have always felt like the black sheep in life. The things that made me different weren’t always celebrated and I used to cover those attributes up in fear of being told that I would never be good enough. It took years of pain, false identities and failure to truly understand how to let go.
Letting go in the right ways and for the right reasons feels liberating and clarifying. Let go of the things that hurt you and tell you that you don’t deserve more. Let go of ideals, values and morals that others have imposed on you. Let go of pain, despair, negativity and hopelessness. Letting go will transform your life.
