Glass Half Full or Half Empty?
That age old quote has lingered in our minds from time to time. There are times when I have heard that quote so many times that it almost lost it’s meaning. It was as if I heard it so many times and I understood the concept, but I just didn’t want to embrace it.
There are many things in life that we encounter and learn, but if we aren’t ready for the lesson then the symbolism is nonexistent. There are many variables that must be in place for us to not only experience something from a neutral perspective, but to also embrace it’s lesson. Sometimes we enter a situation and our emotions and ego take the wheel. We begin to lose sight of the facts and go into auto-pilot. When we allow our past conditioning, emotions and fears to create the storyline for us, we lost sight of the real lesson.
I get it, most life lessons are filled with pain. We go through disheartening and painful situations that eventually open our eyes to what our focus should have been all along. Sometimes we cannot avoid those painful situations because we encounter the darkness to discover the light.
“We encounter the darkness to discover the light.”
Life is going to be an endless amount of experiences and lessons. It is up to us in terms of how we view and respond to these experiences. I am no stranger to falling prey to the victim mentality. The victim mentality shows up in many different forms. It shows up when we feel bad for ourselves, when we view our lives as “lack” and many other forms. A big contributor to the victim mentality is comparison, especially in the world of social media.
We are constantly viewing accomplishments and celebrations of those around us on an abnormally instantaneous feed. It creates this lingering feeling within us, making us wonder if we are truly doing enough and accomplishing enough. These new avenues of insight can sometimes be a shock to our systems. Sometimes old thought processes and mental conditioning go into high gear and we lose sight of what we really should be focusing on.
Our main focus should really begin to shift into the infinite abundance and opportunities that we have. It takes an immense amount of mental strength and awareness to move past the “glass half full” mentality these days. It might seem impossible but there is one thing that has been truly helpful to me on my own journey. Now, I am not saying that I am super positive or in this magnificent place, but I will say that I am much better than I have been in the past. One thing that I have truly tried to stay focused and dedicated upon is meditation.
We all know that the less present that we are, the more problems and pain we begin to feel. Meditation has allowed me to stay focused. It has shown me what matters in this moment. It has slowly healed my ego and trained me to tune out the external noise and intense emotions that cry out with no purpose. You can read as many articles or books that you want on meditation, but it won’t actually click until you experience it’s purpose in your own personal life.
Try to meditate when your ready. Begin small and continue to grow into it. I started my meditation practice by doing a simple ten minute grounding meditation every morning. Meditation in the morning has helped me to begin my day on an aware and centered mentality. This allows me to encounter any issues throughout the day with an open and clear mind. It takes a lot of practice, but if you are ready to make the appropriate changes then you will flourish and thrive.
